Finishing and Maintaining your Gate

You may have your gate shipped with three finishing options:
(1) Unfinished
(2) Urethane Clear Coat
(3) Custom Color Painting.

Unfinished
Many of our gates are shipped in the unfinished condition, that is, with no stain or sealing material applied. The wood on your gate will have a well sanded, smooth surface that is ready to accept the finish of your choice.

We typically recommend an oil-based penetrating type sealer/stain, as this is the simplest way to maintain our cedar products. One product we recommend is Sikkens Cetol SRD, which is available in a variety of tones.

NOTE: As our gates are constructed from kiln dried cedar, it is very important not to let the gate absorb moisture before applying the finish. If you decide to hang your gate before applying a finish, do so immediately after hanging it.

Urethane Clear Coat (semi gloss
)
Three coats of professionally sprayed semi-gloss urethane, with sanding before each coat.

Note: Although this is a durable finish, periodic recoating of the product may be required. Information on the urethane material use can be found at this link.

Custom Color Paint

Two coats of primer and three coats of paint, with sanding before each coat. We can do a
custom color match for you. Simply mail us a color swatch or sample and we will take care of the rest. Our paint of choice is exterior Miller Paint.
Any extra paint remaining from your project will be shipped along with your gate for future touch up.

Additional Notes Regarding the Appearance of our Gates

Pacific Gate Works products are composed of wood species which are typically considered suitable for outdoor purposes. Wood selection is based on dimensional stability, weather resistance and rot resistance. Pacific Gate Works’ wood products must be treated and maintained properly to increase longevity and structural stability. These treatments include applying a suitable oil based or water based stain, or suitable water proofing product. Failure to provide proper preventative maintenance of the wood products may cause excessive cracking, warping, cupping, end grain checking, joint failure as well as other defects inherent to wood.

Pacific Gate Works products are partly constructed from wood products and may contain defects which are considered inherent defects for wood based products. These include, but are not limited to, knots, knot holes, minor splitting along the direction of wood grain which does not impact the structural integrity of the wood, checking at board ends, twisting, cupping, and color variations. While Pacific Gate Works takes steps during the wood selection and manufacturing process to minimize and/or eliminate the occurrence of these types of defects, completely preventing their occurrence cannot be ensured.

Wood products are sanded to a minimum of 80 grit, however small dents can be visible. While Pacific Gate Works takes steps during the manufacturing process to minimize and/or eliminate their occurrence, completely preventing their occurrence cannot be ensured. Small indentations or defects (less than 1/4in wide max and 1/16in deep max) are not considered manufacturing defects and products may not be returned for this condition.
