For an archtop gate, is the height the top of the arch or the low point of the arch?

This is your choice. You can specify either the low point of the arch or the top of the arch. As our gates are made to order, we will build it to suit your personal preference. Typically, an archtop gate is designed so that the low point of the arch is the same height as the top of the wall.

Can I modify the design of a gate that I see on your website?

We can often accomodate design modifications, such as changing the ironwork slightly. Let us know what you are looking for and we will work with you in designing your custom gate.

How do I know that the gate will fit within my current opening?

Upon placing your order, the first step in crafting your gate is the design process. We will create a detailed drawing of your gate with dimensions, and submit it for your review via email or fax, whichever you prefer. At this time you can change the look of your gate, or any dimensions, if necessary, and we will revise the design. We will start building your gate only after receiving your full approval of the design.

What dimensions do you require to build my custom gate?

We will need to know either (1) the width of your current opening, or (b) the width of the gate you would like. We will determine the clearances for you and submit the design for your review and approval before building.

We will also need to know the height of the gate that you would like. For archtop gates the specified height can be (1) to the top of the arch or (2) the low point of the arch.

What are your standard sizes?

Our standard size is 42in width x 70in height. The frame thickness (rails, stiles and arch) is 1 1/2" thick.
Standard sizes are available for certain designs. Click here to view the selection.

Will my gate withstand the elements?

Western Red Cedar is widely known for its outstanding rot resistance and insect resistance. We always recommend that the wood is sealed with a good quality oil based stained or exterior paint. Always prime before painting as cedar contains tannins, or reddish brown extractives, that could bleed through an improperly primed surface.

From what type of wood are the gates built?

We use kiln dried, clear grade Western Red Cedar for our gates. The wood has excellent dimensional stability and blends well with brick, stucco, stone and other woods such as redwood.

Will both sides of the gate be the same?

The quality of the wood and the sanding on each side of the gate is the same. You will not need to sand your gate upon receipt. It will arrive ready to accept stain.

How long does it take to build my gate?

Although our lead times change slightly depending on the season, most of our standard thickness wood privacy gates ship within 3 to 5 weeks of ordering and wood and iron gates ship within 4 to 6 weeks of ordering. Larger driveway gates typically take approximately 4 to 7 weeks to complete.

Is the gate sanded?

Yes. We sand both sides of the gate so that it arrives ready to accept stain or a primer/paint topcoat.

How is the iron work protected from corrosion? Will I need to treat it periodically?

We powder coat the iron work on the gate. This is a surface coating process that is very protective against rust. Under normal conditions, the powder coating does not need to be treated.

Will my gate need to be stained?

We always recommend staining or applying a primer/paint topcoat to seal the gate from the elements. Despite the fact that Western Red Cedar is an excellent outdoor wood when it comes to rot resistance and insect resistance, it should be protected, especially from water absorption and UV damage to promote longevity and structural stability. Excessive water absorption and subsequent drying will cause wood to expand and contract which should be minimized as much as possible. Sealing the pores with a good quality oil based stain will accomplish this task. Pacific Gate Works offers staining and professional paint services if you would like us perform this task for you.

How often will I need restain my gate?

Frequency of reapplication is a function of several things, including your climate, the quality of the stain, and how well the stain is applied. For this reason it is difficult to say definitively how long, but we have found that good oil based stains typically require reapplication every 2 to 3 years.

What Stains Do You Recommend?

Sikkens makes excellent oil based stains for cedar products. Cetol SRD and Cetol 1 are two products that Sikkens produces that we can recommend. Cabot also manufactures quality oil based stains..
